Is Couchsurfing free in 2026?
Updated
Short answer: no. Couchsurfing.com has required a paid membership since 2020, so you have to pay to contact hosts there. Staying with a host is still free — hosts never charge guests — but the platform itself is not. If you want couchsurfing that is genuinely free, FreeCouchSurf is a free couchsurfing site and app with no membership fee, no booking fee and no premium tier.
What changed in 2020
Couchsurfing launched in 2004 and was free to use for sixteen years — the idea was simply that travellers stay with locals for free and return the favour later. In May 2020, citing the collapse of travel during the pandemic, Couchsurfing.com made a paid membership mandatory for using the platform. Existing members had to pay to keep messaging hosts and sending stay requests.
The change split the community. Some members accepted the fee as the cost of keeping the site alive; many hosts, who were the ones offering their homes for free, left for free platforms instead. That is why searches like "free couchsurfing", "couchsurfing alternative" and "is couchsurfing still free" have stayed high ever since.
How much does Couchsurfing cost?
Couchsurfing.com offers monthly and annual memberships, and prices depend on your country. When the fee launched it was widely reported at roughly US$2.39 a month or US$14.29 a year. Price checks in 2025 showed around US$4.99 a month or US$19.99 a year in the US, and about €5.99 a month or €22.99 a year in Europe. Prices change, so check Couchsurfing.com for the current figure in your region.
Do you pay the host?
No — on any real hospitality-exchange network, the stay itself is free and hosts must not ask for money. Good guests still give something back: cooking a meal, bringing a small gift from home, sharing stories, helping with the dishes, or hosting someone else later. If a "host" asks for payment, that is a red flag; report the profile.

FAQ
Is Couchsurfing free?
Not any more. Couchsurfing.com was free from 2004 until 2020, when it introduced a mandatory paid membership to use the platform. Staying with a host is still free — hosts must not charge guests — but you need a paid account to message hosts on Couchsurfing.com. FreeCouchSurf is a 100% free alternative with no membership fee.
How much does Couchsurfing cost?
Couchsurfing.com sells monthly and annual memberships and prices vary by country. When the fee launched in 2020 it was widely reported at about US$2.39 a month or US$14.29 a year; 2025 price checks showed around US$4.99 a month or US$19.99 a year in the US and about €5.99 / €22.99 in Europe. Check couchsurfing.com for current prices.
Do you pay your host when couchsurfing?
No. On any genuine hospitality-exchange platform, hosts offer their space for free and asking guests for money is against the rules. Guests often say thank you by cooking a meal, bringing a small gift from home or helping around the house — but that is a gesture, not a payment.
Can I use Couchsurfing without paying?
On Couchsurfing.com, creating a profile is possible but contacting hosts requires a paid membership. If you don't want to pay, use a free hospitality network such as FreeCouchSurf, BeWelcome or Trustroots, where hosting and surfing cost nothing.
Is there a free couchsurfing app?
Yes. FreeCouchSurf has free apps for iPhone and Android (listed as CouchTravel in the app stores) and a web app at freecouchsurf.com. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase needed to message hosts, and no booking fee.
Why did Couchsurfing start charging?
Couchsurfing said in 2020 that the pandemic had cut its revenue and that a paid membership was needed to keep the platform running. Many long-time members moved to free alternatives, which is why searches for free couchsurfing sites grew sharply after 2020.
