Couchsurfing in Yerevan: local guide
Updated · Written for travellers staying with local hosts
Yerevan is built from pink and apricot-coloured tuff stone, and on a clear day Mount Ararat fills the horizon behind it. Staying with locals here means being drawn into family life quickly: someone's grandmother will feed you, a cousin will offer a lift, and coffee appears at every visit. Hosts include students, young professionals in the growing IT sector, and diaspora Armenians who have moved back from Russia, Lebanon, France or the United States, so English, Russian and French are all common. The centre is compact and evenings are lived outdoors in cafes and parks. For budget travellers it is affordable, and the city works as a base for monasteries and mountains within a couple of hours.
Best neighbourhoods in Yerevan for travellers
Getting around Yerevan
Yerevan has a single metro line that is useful for some routes, but most locals rely on buses and minibuses. Ride-hailing apps such as Yandex Go and GG are widely used and inexpensive, and they solve most late-night and airport journeys. A public bus also links Zvartnots Airport with the centre. The central district is compact and pleasant on foot, though summer heat makes long walks tiring in the middle of the day.
Yerevan on a budget
Street food and bakeries keep costs low: lahmajo, khorovats (grilled meat) wrapped in lavash, and cheap pastries from corner shops. The GUM market and smaller neighbourhood markets sell dried fruit, cheese and herbs for little money. Sit-down meals in local taverns are reasonable, while cafes on Northern Avenue and around the Cascade cost noticeably more. Shared minibuses to Garni, Geghard or Lake Sevan are much cheaper than private drivers.
Free things to do in Yerevan
- Climb the Cascade steps for views towards Mount Ararat
- See the outdoor sculptures in the Cafesjian garden
- Browse the weekend Vernissage market for crafts and carpets
- Visit the Tsitsernakaberd memorial overlooking the city
- Walk up to the Mother Armenia statue in Victory Park
- Watch the evening fountains in Republic Square
Staying with a host in Yerevan: etiquette
Shoes come off indoors, and hosts may offer slippers. Expect to be offered coffee or tea as soon as you arrive; accepting is polite. Armenians tend to insist on feeding guests and on paying, so offering to cook a meal or bringing sweets, fruit or a bottle of brandy is a good way to reciprocate. Families can be close-knit and conservative, so dress modestly when visiting relatives or churches. Learning barev dzez (hello) and shnorhakalutyun (thank you) is appreciated.
Best time to visit Yerevan
Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with mild temperatures and clear views of Ararat. Summers are very hot and dry, and winters are cold with occasional snow.
