Couchsurfing in Zurich: local guide

Updated · Written for travellers staying with local hosts

Zurich is Switzerland's largest city and one of the most expensive places in the world, which makes a free stay with a local hugely valuable. Hosts are often students and researchers from ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, bankers, designers and international professionals, many living in apartments in Kreis 4, Kreis 5 or Wiedikon. Swiss hosts are typically punctual, orderly and quietly friendly, with a high value placed on privacy. The city is clean, safe and beautifully set on the lake, with mountains visible on clear days. For budget travellers, swimming in the lake and the Limmat river, walking the old town and hiking the Uetliberg are free and very local experiences. A host can share tips on the best summer swimming spots and cheaper supermarkets.

Best neighbourhoods in Zurich for travellers

Kreis 4 (Langstrasse)
A lively, multicultural district with bars, cheap eats and Zurich's nightlife. Gritty by Swiss standards and very central.
Kreis 5 (Zürich-West)
A former industrial area with converted factories, Frau Gerolds Garten and the shops under the Viadukt railway arches.
Niederdorf and Altstadt
The old town on the Limmat's east bank, with narrow lanes, churches and guild houses. Beautiful but pricey for food.
Wiedikon
A residential district with a local feel, good cafés and easy access to the Uetliberg.
Seefeld
A smart lakeside area with promenades, parks and the Zürichhorn, ideal for swimming and walks.

Getting around Zurich

Zurich's ZVV network covers trams, buses, S-Bahn trains and boats on a zone-based ticket, with day passes good value for visitors. Contactless payment and the SBB and ZVV apps are widely used. The S-Bahn runs from the airport to Zürich HB, the main station, in about ten to fifteen minutes on a standard ticket. The centre is compact and walkable, and the lakeside paths are excellent for cycling.

Zurich on a budget

Self-catering is essential. Supermarkets such as Coop, Migros, Lidl and Aldi are much cheaper than restaurants, and Migros and Coop takeaway counters offer the best-value hot meals. Kebab shops around Langstrasse are among the cheapest places to eat. Alcohol and restaurants are very expensive, so meals out add up quickly. Fill your water bottle at the city's many public fountains, which supply clean drinking water.

Free things to do in Zurich

  • Swim in the Limmat or lake from public bathing spots
  • Hike up the Uetliberg for views of the Alps
  • Walk the lakeside promenade from Bellevue to Zürichhorn
  • Explore the lanes of Niederdorf and Lindenhof hill
  • Drink from the city's public fountains
  • Browse the Bürkliplatz flea market on summer Saturdays

Staying with a host in Zurich: etiquette

Remove your shoes at the door. Swiss hosts value punctuality, tidiness and quiet, particularly on Sundays, when many people avoid noisy chores such as laundry or recycling. Greet your host with Grüezi and a handshake. Recycling is strictly sorted, so ask how it works. Keep noise down after 10pm in apartment buildings. Bringing a small gift, such as chocolate from home, wine or flowers, is appreciated.

Best time to visit Zurich

June to September is ideal for swimming, hiking and outdoor events, with long, warm days. Winter is cold and grey in the city but brings easy access to ski areas and Christmas markets.

Take the S-Bahn or InterCity train from the airport station to Zürich HB. Trains are frequent, quick and much cheaper than a taxi. A ZVV ticket covering the right zones, bought through the SBB app or a machine, is valid for the trip and onward trams or buses.

Zurich is one of the most expensive cities in the world, especially for eating out and accommodation. Staying with a host, buying food from supermarkets, drinking free fountain water and spending time outdoors keeps costs down. Lake swimming, hiking and walking through the old town are all free.

Zurich has many public bathing spots along the lake and the Limmat river. Some traditional bathhouses, known as Badis, charge a small fee, while open public lakeside meadows and riverbanks are free. Locals often float down the Limmat in summer, so follow their lead and stick to designated exit points.
