Couchsurfing account deleted or banned? What to do next

Losing a profile with years of references is stressful. Here is how to tell what actually happened, what Couchsurfing's own Help Center says to do, and where to keep travelling in the meantime.

Short answer: first check whether the account was deactivated (by you or by Couchsurfing) or permanently deleted. If you deactivated it, signing in again restores it. If Couchsurfing deactivated it, logging in will not work — contact Couchsurfing support through Settings → Contact Support or support.couchsurfing.org. A permanently deleted account cannot be restored. While you wait, free networks such as BeWelcome, Trustroots, Couchers.org and FreeCouchSurf let you keep finding hosts.

What happened to my account?

"My account is gone" can mean several different things on Couchsurfing. Find your situation:

Your situationWhat to do
You deactivated it yourselfSign in again with the same login method you used before (Google, Apple, Facebook, magic link or SMS code). Couchsurfing says a self-deactivated account is restored "right where you left it".
You permanently deleted itDeletion cannot be undone and the account cannot be restored. You can create a new account. Deletion takes up to 90 days to complete, and references you wrote on other profiles are removed.
Couchsurfing deactivated it (policy or safety)You cannot reactivate it by logging in. Contact Couchsurfing support (in the app: Settings → Contact Support, or the request form on support.couchsurfing.org) and ask about your account status.
Your profile suddenly looks emptyUsually not a deletion: signing in with a different method or email can create a second, empty account. Try your other login methods and email addresses to find the original.
You got a conduct warningCouchsurfing says a warning is "not a suspension" and "not a ban". Read the Community Guidelines and do not contact the hosts or guests involved about the report.
Your paid membership endedYour profile is not deleted, but stay requests and messaging require an active membership.

If you see a message like "it looks like your account is no longer active" and you did not deactivate it yourself, the account has most likely been deactivated by Couchsurfing. Only Couchsurfing can review that decision.

How to contact Couchsurfing support

  1. Use the official channels only: in the app, Settings → Contact Support; on the web, the request form on support.couchsurfing.org. If you cannot get into your email, support can update the email on the account.
  2. Send one clear, calm request with the details Couchsurfing asks for: the name on the profile, your date of birth, the email on the account, any older emails, and links to profiles of members you messaged or exchanged references with.
  3. Ask a specific question: "Can you tell me the status of my account and whether it can be reviewed?" is more useful than a long complaint.
  4. Be patient, and keep your expectations realistic. Couchsurfing's Help Center says Trust and Safety enforcement decisions are final, so a review is not guaranteed to change anything.

What not to do

  • Don't open a second Couchsurfing account while the first is deactivated or under review — duplicate accounts are against Couchsurfing's Terms of Use.
  • Don't contact the hosts or guests involved in a report; Couchsurfing says that can itself lead to action.
  • Don't pay anyone who offers to "recover" your account. Only Couchsurfing support can do that, and support is free to contact.
  • Avoid promoting other platforms on Couchsurfing. Members have reported suspensions after mentioning alternatives on their profile (for example in a 2021 Couchers.org forum post). If you want to stay on Couchsurfing, keep your profile about Couchsurfing.

If you are leaving Couchsurfing

  • Cancel your membership separately. Couchsurfing says deleting an account does not cancel a paid membership; cancel it in the app store you bought it from or on the website.
  • Deactivate if you might come back — it hides your profile but keeps your data. Delete is permanent and can take up to 90 days to complete.
  • Save what matters to you before you go: friends' contact details and the text of references you are proud of. References cannot be moved to another site, but you can describe your hosting experience in a new profile.

Starting over on a free network

Losing your references is the hardest part, but you can build trust again on a new network:

  • Pick two or three networks. Sites like Couchsurfing compares them; BeWelcome, Trustroots, Couchers.org and FreeCouchSurf are all free.
  • Write a complete profile with a clear face photo, the languages you speak and what you can share with a host.
  • Mention your experience honestly ("hosted 30+ guests on Couchsurfing since 2015") and link your other hospitality profiles where the site allows it.
  • Get your first references at meetups or by meeting travellers for coffee before you ask for a couch.

On FreeCouchSurf there is no membership fee and no premium tier, and the same account also covers work exchange, house sitting and home swaps. It currently has 2,634 members in 169 countries (live count) — smaller than Couchsurfing, so check your destination first. Please note: FreeCouchSurf is an independent site and cannot see, restore or transfer Couchsurfing accounts or references.

FAQ

Why was my Couchsurfing account deleted?

Couchsurfing does not publish a full list of reasons, but accounts are deactivated by Couchsurfing for breaking the Terms of Use or Community Guidelines (for example safety reports, duplicate accounts or spam). If you did not delete it yourself, first check you are not signed in to a second, empty account; if the original really is gone, contact Couchsurfing support and ask about your account status.

Can I recover a deleted Couchsurfing account?

A self-deactivated account comes back when you sign in again. A permanently deleted account cannot be restored, according to Couchsurfing's Help Center. An account deactivated by Couchsurfing can only be reviewed by contacting their support.

How do I contact Couchsurfing support about a banned account?

Use Settings → Contact Support in the app, or submit a request on support.couchsurfing.org. Include the name on the profile, your date of birth, the email address on the account, any older emails, and links to profiles of members you exchanged references with. Couchsurfing states that Trust and Safety enforcement decisions are final.

Can I just make a new Couchsurfing account?

If you deleted your own account, yes. Having more than one account at a time is against Couchsurfing's Terms of Use, so do not open a second account while an old one is deactivated or under review.

Do my Couchsurfing references transfer to another site?

No. References belong to each platform and cannot be moved. On a new site, build trust again with a complete profile, a clear photo, verification where offered, local meetups, and by linking your other hospitality profiles if the site allows it.

Can FreeCouchSurf restore my Couchsurfing account?

No. FreeCouchSurf is a separate, independent platform and has no access to Couchsurfing accounts. Only Couchsurfing support can review your account. You can, however, join FreeCouchSurf and other free networks at any time.

Does deleting my Couchsurfing account cancel my membership?

No. Couchsurfing's Help Center says deleting your account does not cancel a paid membership; cancel the subscription separately (in the app store you bought it from, or on the website) or you may keep being billed.
